The Indian River Lagoon stretching through Fort Pierce, Jensen Beach, and Sebastian is home to an estimated 2,000+ bottlenose dolphins year-round. Unlike seasonal whale watching, you can spot dolphins on the Treasure Coast in every month of the year — but certain conditions make sightings more reliable and spectacular.
Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November) offer the best combination of calm water, comfortable temperatures, and active dolphin behavior. During these shoulder seasons, dolphin pods are frequently seen feeding in the shallows near Fort Pierce Inlet and the Sebastian River mouth. Summer months (June–August) bring warm water that concentrates baitfish, which in turn draws larger dolphin groups — though afternoon thunderstorms can cut tours short.
Winter tours (December–February) are surprisingly excellent. The cooler water temperatures drive mullet schools into tight formations, and dolphins follow. You'll often see cooperative feeding behavior — where dolphins work together to corral fish — which is one of the most spectacular wildlife displays in Florida.
Morning tours (7–10 AM) consistently produce the best sightings. Dolphins are most active at dawn, the water is glassiest, and the golden hour light makes for stunning photos. Afternoon tours (2–5 PM) also perform well, especially in summer when dolphins retreat to deeper channels to escape the heat of the shallows.
